I wonder what would be
If when you would ask,
"Hi, how are you?"
And I'd take off my mask.
If I'm happy I would share
But also if I'm sad
My voice would reflect
My feelings, good or bad.
When asked how I'm feeling
I have to look at you and see
Can you handle the truth?
Or am I forced to be happy?
I'm starting to get confused
What I'm saying to who
I feel I'm living a lie
'Cause that's what I gotta do.
I'm thinking if the day will come
That I'll take off my mask
And I'm sorta wondering
Will you regret you've asked?
Very true. It is said that "how are you" is the most oftenly asked rhetorical question. No one even expects an answer, much less a real one.
ReplyDeleteI, personally, feel kind of guilty if I respond anything other than "ok" or "great". I feel guilty for being negative. Even if it's just honest or realistic.
There's a big public pressure to put on a happy face. If you're sad, pretending to be happy can make you sadder because then no one is seeing your sadness.
Nechi, this is perfect! I'm so glad you're back at it!! Your poems are so raw and real, they're amazing!!
ReplyDeleteThe important people in your life won't regret that they asked.
ReplyDeleteIn fact...I think they'd support you...
Why are you so scared to try?
Pick one person. Chances are, they can probably relate to your feelings more than you'd guess.......
Chana- this poem is case in point.
ReplyDeleteChev-my blog is 'private' noone knows my 'name'...lol
Corner-indeed most of my poems are about trusting-in various different forms. But I think that the point, that it depends on the other's mood as to what response you have to give, is a true point, no matter how close you are to the person.
Pick me, pick me!
ReplyDeletei find that some ppl you need to have your mask on for..
ReplyDeleteand others you don't...
but, there are advantages to both...
its nice to act 'normal' even though you don't feel it..
and its important to just be able to be...
Grin-great observation!
ReplyDeleteI kinda like the mask I wear. Something like what grinfish said...
ReplyDeleteAnd like CP said, picking one person is best. I have very few people for whom I would take my mask off but it's worth it...because it's hard to always carry it around. Sometimes you just need to breathe...
